Overview

Get started on concrete steps to establishing your sustainability policy and strategy

If you've worked on sustainability award or certification processes, or been part of any framework following sustainability standards, you've come across requirements for a sustainability policy. Having a clearly defined sustainability policy (and importantly - having it implemented) is often one of the main, and even first, criteria for many such processes.

Not sure if your business meet such requirements? Need guidance on getting started? Then this self-guided online course is for you! Explore key concepts, best practices, and practical insights that will help enhance your company's sustainability performance.

Your sustainability policy will be a critical element of your overall approach to sustainability management and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) commitments. Get started now on building a solid understanding of the what, why and how of developing and implementing an effective sustainability policy.

Learning Objectives

This course will strengthen your knowledge and guide your work on:

  • Getting started with an outline of your sustainability policy.
  • Articulating your core values and purpose to guide your commitment.
  • Identifying your ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) priorities.
  • Ensuring your policy is relevant to your business and stakeholders.
  • Designing and implementing your policy as a useful living document.

Key Outcomes

Following the lessons and instructions in this course, you will take concrete steps in building:

  • A solid foundation: Your sustainability policy will serve as a guidance document, outlining your sustainability commitments and providing a consistent framework for how you will incorporate environmental, social and ethical considerations into your organisation.
  • An engagement and communication tool: Your sustainability policy should serve both as an internal guide and an external communication and engagement tool. As such, the development and delivery of your policy should reflect your internal and external stakeholder relations.
  • A living policy document: The key to having a sustainability policy that works for you is actually implementing your policy, not just writing and publishing one. The words in your policy must be turned into actionable, measurable and concrete responsibilities.

Syllabus

30 minutes per day, 5 days.

Each of the five modules of this course takes half an hour to complete. With a short and focused learning session each day (for example during your break, or on your daily commute), you can finish the course just in one work week.

Each module contains three sections:

  • WATCH: Review the video lesson on key topics
  • READ: Learn more from real-life examples
  • DO: Apply your knowledge to your own policy

Starting with the question why having a sustainability policy can support your business, in this module you will learn how the process of developing, implementing and using your sustainability policy will benefit your business. You will also start working on articulating your core values and purpose, which will form the basis for creating a policy that is relevant and impactful.

Building on the core values you’ve identified, in this module you will focus on what your sustainability policy actually is, and work on defining what should be covered in it and how you will apply it. Your work on outlining the scope and content of your policy will support the steps you need for creating a policy that serves as a useful tool for your business.

A key approach you need for crafting an impactful policy is prioritising. In this module you will reflect on the conditions and functions within your company that will affect the implementation of your policy, and work on your policy statements - the essence of your sustainability policy - addressing key Environmental, Social and Governance focus areas.

For your policy to be effective in inspiring commitment and action, it needs to connect with its intended audiences in a meaningful and relevant way. In this module, you will work on finding the right tone of voice for your policy, and preparing for how you will turn your policy into a useful stakeholder engagement and communication tool.

To make sure your sustainability policy is a living document, you need to turn the words in your policy into actionable, measurable and concrete responsibilities. In this module, you will work on identifying and defining key approaches to developing the next steps on your journey to becoming a more responsible business, with action plans and targets.
