Sustainable Tourism Project Management

Effective project management is a critical part of implementing sustainability efforts both at the organization and destination levels.

Tourism industry practitioners therefore benefit greatly from practical project management tools that support long-term project success. 

PM4SD (Project Management for Sustainable Development) is such a tool for project managers, policy makers and entrepreneurs, providing a highly adaptive and flexible process complementing existing guidelines and standards such as the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC) and European Tourism Indicators Syetem (ETIS).


Training Partnership: TrainingAid and Jlag

PM4SD: Internationally Recognized Methodology


The methodology of PM4SD™ has been developed to empower project managers, policy makers and entrepreneurs with tools and techniques to better plan and manage funding and investment in the tourism context.

The methodology has been developed by the Foundation for European Sustainable Tourism (FEST) in partnership with JLag, Leeds Metropolitan University, Network of European Regions for a Sustainable and Competitive Tourism (NECSTouR), as well as with a group of international experts.

PM4SD helps sustainable tourism practitioners use tourism as a force for social, economic and cultural change, ensuring that tourism projects deliver benefits for everyone: visitors, local communities and industry stakeholders. The methodology is based on PRINCE2®, Projects in Controlled Environments, the de facto project management standard used both in the public and private sector worldwide.


PM4SD Training: Certified Capacity Building Scheme

PM4SD is a specialized training scheme for organizations and professionals working in the tourism sector and beyond. Based on the principles of lifelong learning and sustainability, this training scheme forms an important benchmark for competitiveness and growth in the tourism industry and the achievement of sustainable development goals.

PM4SD training helps project managers and industry stakeholders improve their tourism management skills and enhance sustainability performance, and is especially relevant for project managers, policy makers, tourism organizations as well as associations, governments, construction managers, universities, training organizations, NGOs, researchers, students involved in small, medium and large tourism development projects.
