About The Ocean Conference

The Ocean Conference is the high-level United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development). The conference will be convened at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 5 to 9 June 2017, coinciding with World Oceans Day, to support the implementation of SGD 14. The Governments of Fiji and Sweden have the co-hosting responsibilities of the Conference.

Side events sponsored by Member States, UN system and other Inter-Governmental Organizations as well as Major Groups and other stakeholders, will be organized at the UN Headquarters in New York in the margins of the official meetings of the Ocean Conference and its Preparatory Meeting to allow space for sharing experiences and provide alternative opportunities for dialogue.

EU Tourism Committed to Blue Growth

Coastal and Maritime Tourism is one of the key sectors of the European Union Blue Growth Strategy with a high potential for sustainable jobs and growth. Tourism employs over 3.2 million people and generates a total of €183 billion in gross value added, representing over one third of the maritime economy. The Universal dimension of the SDGs provides the EU regions with the opportunity to show leadership and share best practices to extend their Blue Growth strategy in other parts of the world.

The side event "EU Tourism Committed to Blue Growth" features:

  • Panellists: Mr. Patrick Torrent Queralt, NECSTouR President; Mrs. Birgtta Losman, President of the Regional Development Committee Region Västra Götaland, Sweden; Mrs. Susana Ibáñez Rosa, Secretary General for Tourism in Andalusia, Spain; Dr. Rob Brumbaugh, Director of Ocean Planning, The Nature Conservancy; Mrs. Ana Tejedor Arceredillo, WISE-Marine coordination and cooperation with Regional Sea Conventions, European Environment Agency; and Mr. Chris Elfverson, UNWTO Special Advisor to the Secretary General.
