Charmarie Maelge has started her tourism career as the Director Marketing for the Tourist Board 20 years ago, subsequently taking over the role of Director London Office in the UK and Director Research and International Affairs. Thereafter, she has worked for the UK based Travel Foundation creating the Responsible Tourism Partnership in Sri Lanka. Charmarie has also created the National Sustainable Tourism Certification Scheme NSTCS for the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. Most recently she held the position of the Managing Director for the Sri Lanka Promotional Bureau SLTPB.
She has worked as a gender specialist for UNDP and USAID, has conducted gender and tourism technical research. She has worked in a number of roles to develop women entrepreneurship in the country and has also held the Vice Chairperson role of the Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Sri Lanka. She has national and private sector experience in the tourism sector, she is a certified trainer and assessor in tourism, currently on the visiting faculty of the Hospitality and Leisure Management Department of the University of Colombo.
